Exactly a year after the Blackberry Curve 8520 was released, Canada’s RIM updates the general Curve with 3G and GPS on the new Blackberry Curve 3G 9300. It comes at the heels of the not long ago declared Blackberry Torch and the latest OS iteration in the Blackberry OS v6. Using the same 512 MHz engine, the new Curve 3G will still be running the older v5.0 OS but will be modified once the new version is available for upgrading. Unlike the older Curve, the new 3G version will come in two colors of black and red, sporting a chrome trim that distinguishes it from the old. Hardware-wise, it will portion the same dimensions at 109 x 60 x 13.9mm but is 2 grams lighter at 104g. It will also sport the same screen size, touch optical trackpad and QWERTY ergonomics. Features at a Glance The update starts with having 3G capability on the tri band UMTS (850/ 1900/ 2100) with HSDPA selective information speeds but without HSUPA. It is also the same quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE info connectivity on the 2G network. Hotspot surfing aid gets better with WiFi 802.11 b/g/n equipped with UMA (carrier based) capability which is an betterment over the vanilla WiFi on the older Curve. Local data transfers and synching get the same Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired options, respectively. The Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 now gets SatNav functionality from an in-built GPS with A-GPS help and Blackberry Maps preloaded. The landscape display is a 2.5-inch TFT LCD screen with 65k colors on it is QVGA solution which is identical to what the older Curve 8520 has. Imaging is minimal as Blackberry phones have never been praised for it is camera features. When you see that it is flagship smartphones before the Blackberry Torch only have 3 megapixel cameras, a rudimentary 2 megapixel solution on a fixed focus camera the Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 has is no surprise. It also supports basic video recording. There’s an onboard 256 MB RAM and 25 MB ROM for it is OS and application files but user memory is confined to a closely unlimited phonebook entries. Good thing it has microSD aid for up to 32 GB of external memory expandability. A Competent Music Phone As you may expect, there’s no stereo FM radio typical of all Blackberry handsets. But in spite of being a severe business phone with the signature BES access for secure encrypted email services that have endeared the brand amidst corporate honchos, the Blackberry Curve 3G 9300 is an splendid music phone. It has the competent media playback support for MP3, eAAC+, WMA, WAV and FLAC audio files as well as MP4, H.263/H.264 and WMV video file formats. Stereo listening gets an industry usual 3.5 mm headphone jack while it is A2DP help allows for wireless stereo listening. It even comes with consecrated music keys. The li-ion battery rated at 1150 mAh delivers up to 29 hours of neverending music listening while permitting up to 5.4 hours of talk time on 3G, 4.5 hours on 2G and 19 days in standby. I’m not sure how a card that fails in the vast majority of devices you would use it in gets released and hasn’t been recalled yet. It is too bad as Partiot is usually a decent manufacturer. I have contacted support asking them what I am supposed to do with my defective cards but have yet to get a response. I don’t want to return them because these will be great cards when the problems get sorted out (they are very fast), but right now they are worse than useless as they make any device I put them in unstable and corrupt any data I put on them. I definitely can’t recommend this card right now unless you don’t plan to use it in a phone or tablet (which is about the only reason I can think of to buy a microsdhc card). Update: Patriot support was not able to help me but they said they were willing to RMA in exchange for a class 4 (which will hopefully work). Sure I paid for a class 10 and a class 4 would have been cheaper in the first place, but I just want something that works at this point so I am willing to swap for something slower if it fixes the problem. 27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. I’m glad I did! This card performs great and gives me plenty of storage space. I ran one of the many available free benchmarking tools on it (you can find plenty on Google) and it wrote to all of the storage space to verify there were no problems with the card. It clocked the write speed at 11.6MB/sec, and the read at 17.5MB/sec, so the speed claim by Patriot holds up. I popped the card into my HTC Evo phone and it was great seeing how much faster applications stored on the SD card were loading up. Note: I ended up buying the card on Newegg because it was quite a bit cheaper there than Amazon’s current price, also with free shipping. However it looks like Amazon has accordingly dropped the price, so I recommend comparing the two before buying. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful.
