OK, so on to unit number two. This one’s display functioned, but the USB connection is intermittent. When I did get the USB to function for a few moments, it did a leisurely transfer of a dozen pictures and displayed them. I say leisurely, because it’s apparently a USB 1.1 interface and only transfers files at a rate reminiscent of telephone dial-up modems. But then, it’s not as reliable a connection as the dial-up modem, so perhaps that comparison is not fair … to the dial up modem. I had originally intended to give these away as Mother’s Day gifts, but can’t really see doing that now. Even if I could get one or the other to work, I don’t think they would be reliable. Staples is no help and does not stand by their product. Finally, even if I could get it to work reliably, the picture is nothing to write home about. I Photoshopped the files so that they would match the resolution of the frames (480 pixels wide by 234 pixels tall – this is not a typo), but the results were just OK. It’s like looking at an old standard definition tube TV from the 70′s. All that aside, since Staples has been useless in helping me with their poor quality product, I would comment that the pseudo-wood frame and matt look OK. It is possible that I could salvage them and just put a regular photo inside if I wanted to take the time to remove all the useless electronics, put them in e-waste, and then hang the results somewhere. But no, I guess I can’t do that either because of the crummy aspect ratio. Most of you probably shoot cameras that have a 2:3 aspect ratio, or something close to that. This has a ~1:2 ratio (it’s not even 16:9 like an HD TV) so I’d have to shoot a photo and crop it to match for composition! Glad it was almost free after rebate last Thanksgiving. Avoid Staples brand electronics (Omnitech). They are poor quality and the company doesn’t stand by them. In fact, avoid Staples.
